Hi guys,
I am just wondering if anyone is too sure about what ports need to be opened to run a hub , which is running on a network. Its connected by 10/100 mbit ethernet card and i am using Win2K3 Server.

I am pretty much confused cuz the server is a 100mbit one and i normally get 2-9mbps , but for some reason the no of users after switching to this server have been decreased?

Its much faster line than wat i had b4, its good OS.. So i am wondering if i am setting up my ports wrongly?

plop

411 tcp and 413 udp (last is not necesary as it's used a search pasive users).
for those ports you have 2 except connections from any port number.

Thank u plop!

I read ur previous posts and it said u shud open 411 TCP , 412 TCP and UDP, 413 TCP (and maybe UDP) you said...

I done as u said now, and will see if there is any changes to the hub performance.

412 tcp/udp = for nmdc clients (transfer/search).
1412 tcp/udp = for dc++ clients (transfer/search).
9xxx tcp/udp = for dcgui (transfer/search) (many linux users change the default ports).
411 tcp = the hub (connecting users)
413 udp = the hub (searching pasive users)
now you got the whole list. lol

So if i am running a Hub only on my pc, i wud have to allow these in my firewall?

411 tcp = the hub (connecting users)
413 udp = the hub (searching pasive users

if its a YES, then why is it giving me connection timeouts?

MrZ

Hia:))

BlazeXxX... are u trying to connect by the hostname ?? (the no-ip thing). If so try the localhost 127.0.0.1

If not,, how do you try connect, were is the hub contra the client etc

I have this info from "somewere" hehe:
port 2501 is used for registering at the hublist
port 4112 is client default (for connecting to port 411 of the hubs).

G-luck man, were here1

Z ya
Always remember that you are unique... just like everyone else :-D

BlazeXxX

Hey MrZ,
Thx for ur reply :) Basically i am not using no-ip.com.. I got a proper DNS that has domain name like google.com . Its connecting now but whats happening is that Eventhough my line is capable of handling 500+ users, its not taking up even 300 users, which is sad.

I got a P4 HT tech 2.7GHz Speed server with 512DDR Ram and its on a 100mbps uplink network.

I now got 411 TCP and UDP added, 413 UDP added to allow passive search.

All i want to know is, What ports do i need to allow in order to run a perfect hub ? I am not talking abt clients here.

If i want to allow DC++,NMDC and passive searches to be allowed, what ports must i allow on my firewall?

Hub is working fine, but its resetting users up after a while.. So please tell me the ones i need to add, cuz i am confused with ppl giving me diff ports :(

plop

is there a router between your hub and the net ??
if so you need 2 route the ports witch serve inbound connects.
next question do you happen 2 have a realtek network card??
if so remove it from your computer and start jumping on it, those things die on 250-300+ connects.

This is how it works.

I am hosted on a big network , which provides dedicated servers. They have 100mbps uplink on their network and 1GBPS downlink.

I am only going to be using Uplink speed, so i checked the properties of it.

It shows this in the connection properties.

Network Adaptor: Intel PRO / 1000 MT Network connection

Location: PCI slot 1

Then in advanced menu, it got options like Coalesce buffers, Receive buffer etc..

When i tested the speed of the line, it showed up as 9mbps since its on a fast network.

When i upload any file from the server to another server , it gives me like 3mbps + most of the time.

To handle 500 users, all u need is 2-4mbps uplink speed. I have that but its resetting once it got to 300 users.

So everytime i get 300+ , it resets the users and it goes down to 200 again :S

Any idea if its the port setting, or Network setting or any other issues?

Here is some of the Details u might want in addition:

Operating system: Windows 2003 server std edition
Uplink : 100mbps (mostly 2-9mbps)
CPU: P4 2.7Ghz with HT
RaM: 512DDR Ram

There is no other appz using the line at the same time..

Please someone help me out here! Anyhelp is greatly appriciatable :)

plop

i gues they might have done some changes on the registry, 200-300 connections for a webserver is pretty heavy so that sounds logical 2 me.
try 2 find that registry patch witch was flooting around on the old board, with some modding you can make it work for 500 users or more.
gotta think about this some more when i'm awake.

Hmmm.. Is there anyway to solve this pbm ? does anyone have the registry patch ?

I asked them, and they said they don't have any restriction on the server or any kind of CAP on the speed. If anyone has the registry patch to make it work good, pls let me know.

Thx for the help ;)

hi plop.

Not looking for an argument here ;) but I think 413 ist for multihubbing. I've routed only the 411, and my hub's been running for years now :) I've made some tests with passive clients to be sure, and they don't create any activity on the 413.

So if I'm right (and unless you use multihubbing), you only need to route the port 411 to the machine hosting the hub, and then configure your firewall to allow 411 tcp inbound and anyport for tcp outbound.

Obvsiously, this only works if you don't run the client on the same machine as the hub, because otherwise you'd need to open a few other ports as well :)

cheers

no offence taken, but info about that port can be found in the changelog.
PtokaX DC hub software - Ptaczek/Frontline3k/aMutex (c) 2oo2/2oo3
-----------------------------------------------------------------

v0.326 TestDrive4
- added AntiMoGlo description (Im not sure about the functionality)
- added TempBan default ban time setting
- added handling for unknown $commands. Return 1 from DataArrival to validate command.
- added slot checking for passive users - fixed UDP port 413 is used as the checker listener (will be adjustable in next release)
there's more after that line but no need 2 place that here.
and like i sayd, it's for slot checking only.
you can run fine with that slot closed, doesn't cause any problem unless you have a script witch uses it.
multihubbing uses a much higher port, forgot witch 1 do (can check it out if you want).

Thx plop and yepyepyep4711 !

I am just using the built in firewall of windows 2003 server. I allowed port 411 TCP and UDP..

Does this automatically give TCP in and out? there is no other option abt in and out.. all i can add is TCP or UDP ?!?!?

Wud this be a cause of resetting users once it reached a limit like 250 - 300 ?

bight moment here, if the 2k3 firewall is the same as xp and i gues it is, then that might also cause problems.
gues it's a real good idea 2 try some other firewall.
for port 411 only tcp is needed (apps like "active ports" can show you witch port a program actualy opend and what type).

alright. Don't understand how it works, but guess I had missed something somewhere. Probably because I never used 0.326 :)

Well, guess I wait until is configurable, I need 413 somewhere else.
Quotemultihubbing uses a much higher port, forgot witch 1 do (can check it out if you want).
Naa, thanks. You're too kind :)

and Blaze, plop's right, throw that integrated firewall away, and get something that works. Can't really advise any, because it's been a looong while since I last saw a simple firewall. Just DON't take ZoneAlarm. Kerio is freeware and good, although it does too much to my taste. Tiny has become so bloated it stops very short of making you coffee.

I'm still using my old freeware version of tiny, if you want it. It takes some typing to set your rules, but it really only do what it's told.

cheers

plop

yep yepyepyep is right on kerio/tiny, they became 2 big.
kerio 2.x is oke but after that it gone downhill, same for tiny.
2 much useless things witch have nothing 2 do with a firewall, especialy for a server.

yepyepyep if you like that old tiny you should take a look @ visnetic firewall.
it's a 100% rules based firewall just like that old tiny firewall, just it supports all new protection tricks, but without those usesless filters nearly all new firewalls have.
it takes some time/knowledge 2 set it up but it's worth it.

Thx for the replies.. Kerio is freeware? I think its 30 day trial nowdays and tiny is free yea..

But will it work on Windows 2003 server OS ?

yepyepyep4711

plop is right ;)

visnetic looks great (just installed it) but it's demo ware (30 days) and costs nearly 100 ? :(

If you want the old tiny, you have 30 Minutes to come to my hub, I'll give it to you :)

Or ask me again some other day :)

But if you have the money (or "stumble" upon a copy of visnetic), go for it, it's more "newbie-friendly" than my old tiny.

And yes, any of these will work on your w2k3. Just search the net for instructions to really deactivate the integrated firewall first.

cheers

Thx buddy for ur post ! Will this allow remote installation ? cuz i am maintaing the server remotly.. so wudn't it lock me out ?

visnetic firewall consists of 2 parts.
1 you always need, the firewall itself.
2 the remote admin console, you can change all rules from your home compie and watch all traffic.
just 1 important thing you have 2 remember, DON'T START IT RIGHT AFTER THE INSTALL.
the default is block everything also remote admin.
so 1st thing you gotta do is make a rule for that.
for more info look on this site.

there should come a red icon in your system tray.
try browsing the visnetic forum, might be a conflict with 2k3.

disable firewall startup, and run it seperatly once os has booted, locks desktop ;)
Resistance is futile!
