I'm an noob cunsering the Unix enviroment i need help to setup my hub on a linux...
the Hub is sitting on a windows server 2003 computer on my network [acting as a server : hosting the hub and sharing the internet]
PC Specs:
CPU: Celeron 400mhz
RAM: SDRAM 256mb [PC133]
HD: Western Digital [20gb]
ADSL: 768/96

bastya_elvtars

either use wine or go for a linux-specific hubsoft.
Everything could have been anything else and it would have just as much meaning.

is there Ptokax for Linux?
i'm not sure there is, and i'll never drop ptokax  :D
so my only solution is using wine if i understand currectly wise is for runing windows based programs in linux enviroment?

Meka][Meka

indeed it is, but its not brilliantly stable, ur better off running it on a win2k3 server ;)
Do you know what \'nemesis\' means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an \'orrible cunt... me.

BoJlk

Nice to see ya Meka][Meka
then what are my choises  ?(
the System Specs. are not enought for the Server 2003
and i want to upgrade the stability part for my Hub, and the way to do it is going for Linux.

imby

I know this will make me unpopular hehe, but xp seems pretty stable for a hub. 30 days uptime is no problem even on my crappy system.

bastya_elvtars

2k advanced server is the key

beside wine there is win4lin now, which from what i have been reading is a lot better.

consider using a better linux distro. mandrake is #5 in this poll along with suse. there are slackware or debian which are much more stable. (i use slack 10.1)

BoJlk

can you post me a link for downloading Slaware 10.1?

bastya_elvtars

i disrecommend slack as it is not too easy to set up (much commandline), i give my vote for debian (thou i use slack). Altho if you wanna learn  linux, i recommend slack.

is Win4Lin is paid program or free? (as was suggested bu plop)
and where can i get it?
i'll stick with MandrakeLinux distribution (alltho i've got the Slack too)
so how do i run the PtokaX on Linux ?
what program should i use to imulate the Windows enviroment?

Heyall,
bumpin' up an old post here... I recently switched over to linux, currently using Ubuntu, a debian distro. I'm trying to run PtokaX through wine, and failing. The ptokax window shows up but I can't do anything with it, and I have to force-quit the prog.
Win4Lin is $29.95, so that won't do... if anyone has another free solution, I'm more than willing to test it ;) The other linux hubs, namely OpenDCHub and VerliHub, are too "command-line-oriented" for my taste & n00b knowledge :P

Do you have a windows install? WINE will work properly if you use that one. I tried Total Commander and Windows Media layer under WINE/Knoppix, and all worked, just there were some charset f*ckups.

What so you mean, "a windows install"? I've got win2k pro installed on the same box, same HD, different partition, running fine. But still PtokaX will not run under wine :( On a side note I just looked up VMWare but ouch! they're even more expensive than Win4Lin 8o
New idea just now: I'm running KDE as a desktop environment and sometimes it's a bit buggy, I'll try switching back to gnome (the default environment) and running ptokax again. I'll post back ;)

There is some config wizard for WINE (I am not into linux too much), try to rerun that.

wine needs all the dll's and more system files which are also needed on windows.
the easiest trick is 2 use a windows install as a base so wine can use all the system files from that.
on ptokax the database has 2 be disabled, thats pure windows based.

all linux/bsd flava's can be looked up here.

well I re-installed wine, redid all the config, and tried running ptokax out of gnome. I went a bit further than with KDE, i.e. I could edit the hub's settings, but I get a "Windows socket error (10013) on API 'bind'" when trying to start it. Ah well, I'll try again later, maybe if I get another ditro ;)

vmware is also an option, that lets you install windows in linux , makes windows more stable ;) ... and then ptokax runs fine ,, i had it running in xp under Fedora with no probs..

bolamix

Thx for your input Typhoon ;)
VMWare looks nice, but it also looks expensive, so... I'll put it on the backburner until I'm rich and famous, right? Right. :D
