Every now and then, but regularly, a post appears in which one requests a script that can be used to see who people download from, who they send pm to, and sometimes even what is being said.

To stop this once and for all :

This board nor the scripters using this board, will ever co-operate in such a request. If you feel you cannot trust a user with a functionality, remove this functionality for this user instead.

Requests for scripts for "spying"-usage will be deleted !

Should I also put this into the rules?
Everything could have been anything else and it would have just as much meaning.

In this case remove all scripts on the board with anti advert functions, it's a control of the privacy because it's a pm...
You guys who are making great debate from nothing, you should all know that since you are connected on the net you are monitored, so it's not with one or 2 scripts that the things will change in worth or in better, those scripts exists, that you allow them on the board or no, it change nothing, they will be share on dc, share on another board....
I'm not for or against those scripts, they exist and that's all.

bastya_elvtars

I am not sharing your point. Should I commit suicide because I'm gonna die anyway? :P
We do what we do for privacy. And anti-adverts filter PMs not forward them to others.

Stormbringer

Commit a suicide, maybe, maybe not you have to check what is positive and negative in your life.

More seriously, did you noticed that the repression never works?
p2p is condamned in thousands of country, people are using less their pc to download illegal stuff? No, there are more and more each day.

You have to keep in mind that only a minority of owners are using this kind of scripts (You must realy have time to loose to read all pm's of a hub... lol). Even if you don't allow them on this board they will find those scripts, with your help or without, same conclusion in both case

bastya_elvtars

Anyway, we will not help them.

The most important point is that people who read your private messages are sad bastards that need to get a life. In fact I think it's a disgusting invasion of privacy. Also reducing the availability of these scripts on big sites like this obviously will ensure less are used, even if it's not a huge reduction.

bastya_elvtars

I've got one more thing in mind: why not shut down this forum? The DC protocol is dying anyway. ;-)

Interesting topic :)

Of course, all of you are right, but some 'more extreme' views are cannot be understood here. You see, if we take this whole case that level as some people here took it, not just ignoring requests, then mod should start banning with Robocop, and also people who are requesting this.

This request is nothing to be surprised, nothing for a reason to go suicide, nothing that shows the requester is a geek, or fool. This is just about not understanding what private message offers for users, and what they could possibly say in PM. (depending on the people talking, it has possibly no limits - favorite example: YOU're the one being monitored by another PtokaX hub with the script YOU requested, and you're talking to your girlfriend (let's say, lives a few km-s away) about private things. Now that smells bad  ::))

I guess if there would be a description (like the above), accompanying the rule of no spying in rules, that would greatly enhance understanding.

blastbeat

another reason for deleting spy script requests: this function is already build in ptokax (maybe not very comfortable but its possible)

TTB

Hmz... I just don't like spyscripts.... Private Message (PM). Why is it called Private? Oh... of course, so nobody can see them. It is easy to build, but I don't like the way ppl abuse it. I also disagree with the watch function in RoboCop.

The watch function can have a valid purpose though. It limits the amount of people you can watch at a time if I remember correctly, and doesn't last after a session, ie if you log out. So it's a targeted thing, although yes it could be abused.

TTB

The watch function is indeed for one session, but you can spy PMs with it... I don't need to say more. No offence Optimus... in some cases it is very useful to have this option. But I'm certain that (some/most of the) OPs abusing it for several reasons.
