Is anyone else's hub half dead, or it just my hub?

Rincewind

Most of the hubs I use are quieter than they used to be before the demise of hublist.org

Stormbringer

Private are still alive and keep growing each day

imb

Shame hubs have to die because of a hublist. Private hubs wont grow unless you actively and continually hassle people to join.

Not just because of hublist.org. There are many better protocols for filesharing. Actually, DC is just slightly better than FTP.
Oh, and the app itself sucks bigtime.
Everything could have been anything else and it would have just as much meaning.

There are technically better protocols for filesharing but that doesn't mean they are more effective. Also I disagree that the app itself sucks, compare it to soulseek, which is buggy, doesn't have file swarming, takes up a ton of ram. In smaller hubs you can leave it running for a week and it'll still be responsive when you return. It's bad in larger hubs, so I guess it depends on the type of file you are after.

Um... interestingly, I get the worst results with DC. I am interested in what works, not philosophical bullshit (c) D. J. Bernstein

Yeah, you can easily find worse... but the current mainstream filesharing protocols (BitTorrent and ed2k) have wonderful clients to choose from - for Windows and *NIX as well (uTorrent and BitComet for Win, kTorrent, rtorrent etc. for *NIX, eMule and mods for Win, aMule for *NIX; they Just Work (TM). Soulseek is quite obscure, even Gnutella (ROTFLMAO) is more popular.

Yes but in smaller hubs you get nothing unless it is a specialized hub. When I am in 10 hubs hat are 5000+, I can find the files I want, but a) downloads are slow as hell (long live single-source), b) the client takes up all available resources even with protocol compression and userlists turned off. uTorrent runs fine here, with 60+ active torrents, so does eMule with 20-30 active downloads. Badly owned.

You haven't owned me at all, emule takes up a lot of ram and both emule and utorrent make so many connections that my PC dies. Furthermore I find DC++ more effective to find the specialised file I am after. In conclusion you were completely wrong to make a blanket statement about DC++, just because you find it to be a lesser client doesn't mean other people do. People want DC to be good for movies or whatever else, but it is limited by it's very nature, so it should be expected that torrents or emule or whatever will always be better for that kind of file.

Works for me. If your PC dies because of so many connections, then the NIC or something else is crap.

Weird, same goes for emule here. This is a matter of taste, though.

I agree, but then developers should stop the 'our client is the best p2p and we r teh greatest h4xx0rz in teh plan3t!!!1one11eleven'-FUD.

NIC? Sorry I am ignorant about technical stuff. I had a google and found the picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_card You use this as a modem this right? I think I pulled mine out ages ago, and plugged the router directly into the USB port. Is that wrong?

And yes, I disagree with a lot of things the dev have done, but credit where credit is due, they've done good stuff too.

Yes it is, as you say... your PC dies with many connection, and this is reason why :P

Wow, I never knew that. So if I plug the NIC back in, and use the ethernet connection on my router, that should solve it? I thought the thing I took out was just a 56K modem. Shit, I hope I did not throw it away :(
I found it, it was indeed a 56K modem. There's nothing on my PC to plug the ethernet cable into. Leaves me puzzled.

Wow, how about buying a 5-6 EUR PCI NIC? :-)

USB works via DMA so this is generally not a big issue, especially at network speeds, but we are talking about a b0rked interface. That one you linked is a Realtek NIC and it is perfect for home internet connections.

Bought it, thanks for the advice chaps :)
