Title: DDoS
Post by: Dj_OcTaGoN on 12 February, 2005, 10:58:18
Heard there are more and more DDoS attacks out there in the DC community.. I've understood there are some ways to prevent it like disabling IMCP and filter IP's though. This is worse than any flooder..

Buy a firewall like Sygate or ZoneAlarm and then it's fixed ^^

you have DOS attacks and DDOS attacks.
DDOS means distributed, and this can cause so much data that all tho a firewall removes the risk that your computer gets comprimised your hub is gone be unavailable during the attack.
same can happen on a DOS attack if the source has more bw then you.

Only prob with a ddos or dos attack is that norton or other software firewalls always either crash or use up all the ram and cpu your comp has.. meaning that your comp will prob crash and no one can get in your hub if ur comp stays on.. normally you can't use the net either until it stops.

Only chance to stay online is to have a fast connection and hardware firewall.

norton is a crap firewall, visnetic takes it without problem.
so does tiny personal if you enable the nids filter.

hardware firewalls use linux/bsd as a os and for those it's no problem @ all.

*edit: forgot 2 say that there are crap routers out there which allready crash on a simple portscan.
so far i encountered 1, just no idea what model/manufactorer it was.

as john said, all software firewalls will crash, norton will crash due to being the big user friendly interface, uses lots of ram to begin with, visnetic is less user friendly, uses less ram and cpu, but will still crash/freeze comp,

dos is from a single comp, he/she will dos (denial of service) attack u, this of course denials service of ptokax

a ddos is usuaully performed by a worm or such, these attacks are by 1 person using more then 1 connection, often hacked comps,

if u run, winxp, visnetic, dsl 1meg, the attacker has winxp, telia 10mbit, your comp wil crash, if the attacker has dsl 512, it will cause a simple denial of service, blocking connections to u, unless of course ur a lucky git and have more upload,

ps: dos can be performed on a 10mbit connection thru a dsl 512
