help. my processor is being eaten!

Alright.  This thing is really getting me upset.  I am not sure when it started, but in my task manager, the system process is eating up all my CPU.  It sits at 0-1% for about a minute or 2 then jumps up into the high 90's and makes everything from playing a game to watching a movie near impossible.  This started about a week ago and I am not sure why.  I've virus scanned and found nothing.  Nothing seems to be trying to get in or out of my firewall.  Processor is an AMD 1.2GHz with 384MB mem.  This thing never used to do this and I haven't installed anything recently that would cause it to do this that I am aware of.  If anyone has any possible suggestions I sure would like to know as I can not end the system process since it is a vital part of the operating system.  HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

that have happened to me twice..
FIrst, i was bombed with mldc's... ok, solved the problme to chnage port...

2nd: when i changed the port back.. i got an error at a script of mine while i was asleep...
woke up that morning with 2400 mldc's...
But it seems weird unless it's ptokaX related

I don't believe that this issue is ptokax related, that's why I put it in this section of the forum.  I can have anything DC related shut down and it still does it.

Spywares can be a pain too..
i think it's something that hides.
if you run XP or anything that has a logg of your computer then check that out, and see if you can find any errors about that time, when the CPU get's huge..
then you can easily track down the problem

what kind of logs am I looking for, cause I'm not getting any errors.  I have also used spybot s&d to block and remove all spyware.

Not seeing any errors that seem pertinent or corresponding with the times of my processor being eaten up.  Anything else to try other than just shooting the damn thing?

Watch the processes in the task manager to find out which one is using the most process. Duh.

You can't shut it down, but at least you know what's causing it..
svchost you can't shutdown..
I belive there is some kernell error, (Memory)

By the way, another thing to try is to reboot your computer, press f8 or f5 or whatever, then choose
"Last known good configuration" that should solve your problem i hope :)

ok open task manager and look for 2 rundll32's if you are running XP technically you dont need them running, there shud only be 1, so close them both, they will attempt to re-open several times, just keep closing them, until they stop, then goto housecall

and check ur system for infected files,

if all fails, just close rundll32 and when u run an app, it will open the correct dll, seems, theres a worm around, that is using thses system files, to overload memory.........else if all fails, lol format and reinstall windows.....

btw, do not close any svchost theyare there to help give performace closing them, just gonna give ptokax a harder time,

and to Rabid, doesnt matter which is using the most cpu, its what is causing it to use the cpu so much........

Heh. lazyj189 never said it was svchost. You guys still need to find out what the name of the process is before you can troubleshoot.

lazyj189 did say "system" is eating the processor so it could be the system process. If you're really interested in finding the problem and trying to change it, you can get something like spy++ or look around for something that can follow process -> thread and examine processor usage and the window's messages you are getting.

I say all of that is a waste of time. Windows sucks. The real way to fix the problem is to format and reinstall just like every other windows.

@Phatty, how are you going to know what the problem is until you know what is consuming all the CPU? You're just shooting in the dark.

@Rabid well, :), of course u see which process is eating cpu time, but, you must concentrate on why it is, and like u said,, use something to follow the process.... ;)

and i know he never said svchost, but alot of ppl usually close them because they consume quite a bit cpu, sometimes, depending on certain problems, not caused by them, so if thats the case, find out why...... later,,

So you are assuming that it is "a waste of time" tracking down such a problem, And i should quote "The real way to fix the problem is to format and reinstall", yea, That is indeed a fast solution to solve the problem, But then other hand, you never found out "What was causing it?"
then it's another format of 'C' and reinstall..
'Then' we can talk about alot of hassle just because you didn't find out what it was in the first place.
Nah, really, Track it down, not only that you will find the problem, You will gain some new knowledge aswell to other things that might appear with "Every other windows"

Totaly agree with NotRabitWombat. Don't shoot in the dark. First track what process causes the high cpu.
Maybe it's explorer.exe
have seen that many times.
Easy to solve.
But if you don't know from where they shoot you, you can't shoot back. lol

That is just one of many things you can try.
Another thing i've read about is that if you CPU is high and you can't reduce it, then there might be some hardware failure or even a faulty hardware...

By the way, since you use XP (I think?)
Go into your device manager, and disable as much as possible of what's in there, then if your CPU get's lower or even back to 0 then enable one thing at a time to see what's causing it...

I'm not sure but I think I got it nailed.  I think it is related to either the powerreg server v2 and 3 that were in my startup (not that I have a freaking clue as to what they are so theyre gone) or it had to do with the INCD that nero or direct cd uses.  either way, I disabled them all and it seemed to have worked.  Now the damn thing spread and got me sick with the f'ing flu bug so I wont get to enjoy the use of my system for a few days.  Damn these bugs, damn computer viruses and spyware, damn the flu, just when a person starts to get ahead in life, something just has to come along and smite me down with a mighty backhand.  Kinda does make you wonder if computer viruses will ever evolve to the point that we can get sick off of them (as the theme for the twilight zone is playing).
