Sometimes i get this msg from ptokax
[18:17] >>> Garbage DATA from -=: |

What does it mean? and what can i do about it?
It shows in the user and chat window....
We suffer in silence, we lurk in the shadows, we kill in the night
Site currently down, ETA of returning online is 2099 ;p

I was jus gonna make a post about exact same thing! I've never noticed it before but now when I run ma hub it seems 2 use sooooooo much memoty & make all ma other programs crash :s

[15:20] >>> Garbage DATA from -=: |
[16:09] >>> Garbage DATA from -=: |
[17:14] >>> Garbage DATA from -=: |
[18:04] >>> Garbage DATA from -=: |

Hope sum1 can shed sum light on this?

Quik.

My _guess_ would be data that does not match PtokaX DC Protocol. This could be extension features or like the phrase says, garbage data.

However, if PtokaX recognizes the garbage data, there is no reason for it to cause memory leaks or instability.

I like childish behavior. Maybe this post will be deleted next.

So is there actually any wya of filterin this out? Coz it seems 2 be squeezin every last drop of free memory from ma system! :s

You're assuming causation. Is there any way you can verify that garbage data is causing a unstable system, other than, they are both occuring?

If you would like to try filtering anyway, here's how:
1) Make a table of all commands you are going to except.
2) Capture the first word in a message and verify it exists in the table, otherwise, disconnect the user.
3) Make sure the rest of the message follows basic protocol. If it doesn't, disconnect the user :-)

i have some questions to ask,

what ptokax are using? and does the garbage data relate to a user that is online?

Cause sounds like more work of hub killers that use invaild dc proto to make the ptokax software keep a connection alive while flooding with 10000 users from another hub.

An example of this can be the flooders that pass users to a ip and port with the connecttome string, to create a flood of users, and the worse thing is prokax doesnt kick $MyNick and $Lock sends from clients and allows them to timeout.

anyways, let me know

garbage data is simply sending a string like $|$| etc
Resistance is futile!
